The clergy and congregation at St John’s wish everybody a Happy New Year.
The Churchwardens would like to take this opportunity to thank the clergy team, the volunteers and the members of the Parochial Church Council for all their work and look forward to working with everyone again in 2025.
Leading up to the holidays, we would also like to thank those visitors who left your prayers, wishes and messages on our Christmas prayer tree. In light of this, we would like to mention that visitors are still welcome to leave prayers, light a candle and sit in
quiet contemplation in our peaceful Lady Chapel.
St John’s news for the months ahead
Nine-Fifty
This is a significant year for St John’s as it is 950 years since the Normans started building the present church which replaced an earlier Saxon minster on the site. In short, the local Saxon thegns, Edwin and Morcar rebelled against King William, who suppressed the rebellion and harried the north of England. William ordered the Bishop Lichfield north to Chester to found a cathedral in Chester and St John’s was the result.
Throughout the year, we will create displays illustrating the 950 years of St John’s history and these will be added to our media and this publication so please come along visit us.
St John’s musical events
We are looking forward to our three Orchestra concerts throughout the year and the popular Wednesday’s @ One recitals, which will return aft er Easter.
Other popular events
The Unknown Vikings will again pitch their tents outside St John’s; the first being the 9th of March and further exhibitions will continue throughout the year.

Please visit our Lady Chapel at any ti me to light a candle, leave prayers and to sit in quiet contemplation.
If you cannot make it to any services or events, the church is open to visitors:
11.00am to 3.00pm, Monday to Friday.
10.00am to 4.00pm, Saturday
During your visit feel free to browse around our gift shop and Cosy café where you can say hello to everyone and enjoy a hot cuppa and freshly made cake.
